The American Bulldog is an agile counterpart for the English Bulldog. The American version can leap almost six feet into the air due to the strong muscular legs. The front legs are heavy-boned and very straight. But that doesn’t mean he is a slow dog. He loves to run and is light on his feet.

The muzzle is strong and the teeth meet in a tight undershot. Some people crop the ears but the breeders prefer them uncropped. Most of the American Bulldogs have black eyes and a grizzle or black nose. The hindquarters are quite broad and muscular. The coat has various combinations of colors: white, all shades of brindle, tan, brown, or red, or tan.

The standard measurements are: height: 22-28 inches (55-70 cm.) for males and 20-26 inches (52-65 cm.) for females. The females weigh about 60-100 pounds (27-45kg.) and the males around 120 pounds (32-54 kg.).

A well taken care of dog lives up to 16 years.

They are obedient and rather reserved about strangers, but not aggressive. But despite that, they need to be trained and the owner must be firm and a consistent leader. If you want to get a dog like this, remember that he likes to be around humans and also exercise and play a lot. They are ok for keeping in an apartment but they should be taken out to play as often as possible. This breed tends to drool and slobber and some other health problems include hip dysphasia.
